The other passengers try to find a way out for themselves, and boy does this movie have a lot of people running around, trying to avoid each other. Once they’re in the ice cold water, it’s their turn for the crocodile to pick off a person for every available bullet, and the criminals must navigate the swamp for another way to escape, which is a surprisingly detailed task considering the amount of screen time required to get through it.
A weird, trashy, low-budget Mexican war movie. At first, I was like, “Hey, that’s cool! I didn’t know they made cheap rip-offs of Apocalypse Now.” Then I got to the “stupid English dude talks about a bongo-playing Mexican”? Okay, THAT I found tedious. I kinda liked the first half of the movie, but at the end, I liked it even less. Seriously, there was a scene in which a guy tells a story about a bongo-playing Mexican. It’s totally stupid, and I sit there glumly thinking the rest of the movie is just the same.
This will probably be my favorite of the two’monster’ movies from the seventies. It’s two pretty great actors, Pakula and Schatz, teaming up to tell a very tense and entertaining story. The setting is Egypt, which I’m sure added to the tension; more traditional Hollywood casting with a bit of Leonard Dibney to keep everything authentic. Actually, they don’t really use “authentic Egyptian” much. In fact, most of the sets were plywood and they just relied on extensive matte and effects work to make the scenes in the ancient coliseums believable.
A down-to-earth, low budget picture. Complaints include that the film has a slow start and that the plot is not particularly anything special. The premise of the film is simple and straightforward but to the non-horror audiences watching it the film might be hard to understand. Not much is made about the consequences of what happens in the film. There is a big crocodile in the final stage of the film.
